A worldwide Candlelight Vigil for Peace was held on Sunday, March 16, 2003. It was initiated by Archbishop Desmond Tutu, the Win Without War coalition in the US, and MoveOn.org (who had just delivered a peace petition with 1,000,000 signatures to the United Nations Security Council).
Beginning in New Zealand, it was a rolling wave of candlelight gatherings that quickly crossed the globe. Thousands of small groups around the world came together to rekindle the light of peace and hope, and to renew our commitment to creating a just and peaceful world for our children.
